Nuclear accident in Japan: where to get up-to-date information
Following the massive earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011, a number of explosions and fires took place at the reactor buildings of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Japan declared a state of alert and reported leaks of radioactive material. Given the magnitude and the global dimension of the disaster, Japanese authorities and the international community are following the situation very closely. Land use conflicts necessitate integrated policy

Renewable energy production must grow fast to reach the 2020 target
Europe has committed to obtain 20 % of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. An analysis of the 27 EU Member State action plans shows that renewable energy output is projected to grow by 6 % per year on average. Wind power, solar electricity and biofuels are foreseen to contribute with the highest growth rates. If all Member States follow the trajectory outlined in their plans, the EU will exceed its 20 % renewable energy target by 0.7 percentage points.

The number and impacts of disasters have increased in Europe in the period 1998-2009, a new report by the European Environment Agency (EEA) concludes. The report assesses the frequency of disasters and their impacts on humans, the economy and ecosystems and calls for better integrated risk disaster management across Europe.

Covanta Energy increases earnings through acquisition
Feb. 10 -- Boosted by the recent acquisition of Veolia's waste-to-energy assets and higher metals prices, Covanta Energy reported a 4% increase in earnings in 2010, bringing in $470 million in profits compared to $454 million in 2009. Revenues were reported at $1.58 billion in 2010, compared to 2009's $1.68 billion.

ARCA partners with GE to recover foam from refrigerators
Feb. 10 -- The Appliance Recycling Centers of America and GE Appliances & Lighting are partnering to recover insulation foam from refrigerators, and are hoping to divert up to 85% of the weight of an old refrigerator from landfills. The appliance manufacturer also has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Responsible Appliance Disposal Program to help protect the ozone layer and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
